The education system is governed by two entities – the Supreme Education Council (SEC) and the Ministry of Education (MOE). Every year, the Minister of Education and Higher Education from the SEC will announce the annual calendar for schools. Since 2012, the SEC has taken steps to unify the school breaks between independent and private schools.
Schools in Qatar are divided into two systems – government-run independent schools and private schools. There are more than 140 private schools in Qatar, where they offer English-medium curriculum. There are a large number of expatriates working and living in Qatar and most expatriate children are sent to these private schools.
School holidays in Qatar are a prime time for the Qatari families to travel locally and regionally, as well as for expatriate families to take time off to travel back home. The school year in Qatar usually begins in September each year. A very popular school holiday period for travel is the end of year school holidays (between July and September), which coincides with summer in Europe.
